FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. How does it start?

I normally start with an initial minute consultation to discuss your concerns and for me to explain how I work. If you would like to continue we would then jointly agree upon a treatment plan on completion of some assessment sessions. The initial consultation is attended by different members of the family depending on each case. If you are concerned about a child under the age of 12, it is advisable for both parents or carers to attend (if possible) prior to the child attending. This will allow us to collect all the relevant information and talk through any sensitive material. For children between the ages of 12 and 15, parents can attend the initial consultation with or without their child.

For young people 16 years old and over, it is recommended that they attend on their own. This will enable them to own the space and know that therapy is confidential. However, a parent can attend if the young person would like to have their support. I also offer parenting work for parents or caregivers who would like support in improving their relationship with their child or adolescent but for some reason the child is unable/does not want to attend.

  2. What happens in a typical session?

I tailor my approach to the individual child and work in an age-appropriate way. During an individual session, young children do not usually talk directly about difficult things but will communicate through play using the toys provided. Older children may also play or draw whilst teenagers are more likely to talk about their feelings. I usually see children under the age of 5 alongside their parents or caregivers in order to think about their patterns of interaction.

Play is a powerful form of communication which may express how a child feels and the difficulties he or she may be experiencing. I am an integrative therapist and often combine interventions through talk and play with some practical, behavioural strategies. The relationship between the child and the therapist is central to the treatment.

Parent consultations are more flexible in format. I usually have an initial intake and then we agree on goals and a number of sessions. During sessions I provide psychological guidance and practical suggestions for parents to utilise home. I also provide support around what has been challenging or helpful over the past week in the implementations of my suggestions. I can also provide ad hoc additional parenting sessions if needed in future (for example managing life changes such as new baby, new school or if things become more challenging.)

  1. How long does treatment take?

This really depends on the needs of the client and family. I offer both short (around 6-12 weeks) and long term therapy.

  2. How long are sessions?

    Sessions are usually 50 minutes.

  3. Where are you based?

I am based in central Bath and also see clients online.
